Coins, Clads, and Rounds, and German Silver explained…
When it comes to numismatics, all clads are coins. Clad coins are made up of an outer layer that typically provides durability and a desired look, while circumventing the need for a solid metal that may be too expensive to mint for its purpose. A common quarter is a great example. If you look at its edges, you can see the copper internal disc that makes up the base that is later coated and finished in a nickel composite. This allows them to be more cost effectively made while providing durability when used in vending machines, shuffled in pockets, etc. A telling visual sign is the band as noted above. What if you can’t see a band? Since the industry is rife with fakes, a metal analyzer is a good choice for determining if your coin has value for its intrinsic metal makeup. This does not mean the coin does not have value to a collector, but it can discern a fake coated silver coin from a plated one. Metal Go Round identifies fake coins with regularity.
Rounds, on the other hand, are not minted for exchange as currency. They will not have dollar values stamped on them since they are not issued by a mint. Most, however, will say what metal they are made of and its purity. Sunshine, APMEX, and many others make privately labeled ‘Rounds’. Unfortunately, that industry is also full of reasons to be cautious. Since they can be easily copied to look like a ‘real’ round, opportunists will go to great lengths to make a fake. Metal Go Round can identify these as well with our metal analytics tools. The weight may be off, the composition of the metal, and so on are measurable with the right tools. Many times the appropriate outer coating will be true and the inner metal made up of a cheaper metal to give the appearance of a solid round. This holds true for bars as well. The best way to tell is to have them professionally measured for purity. This process is best done with a metal analyzing machine. Again, Metal Go Round is here to identify your rounds for purity.
German Silver is another animal altogether. Developed as an alternative to expensive silver during WWII, it has no silver content in it at all. It is a scientifically created alloy that just looks like silver. The base metals are copper, zinc, and nickel. While a great alternative to silver for tableware, jewelry, and many other things, it is not silver at all. Be sure to understand that you are not buying silver when purchasing this alloy. It has a purpose, but is widely misunderstood as a fine German silver.
If you have any questions at all about the validity of your metals, Metal Go Round can cost effectively analyze the content of your investment.
